 English version

Hello, I’m Rum. Just one week left, I would like to share some tips for learning(or of learning) English, I talked to takuma about these things before, perhaps some of them are useful for you.

First of all, I would suggest you to use to English dictionary instead of mother-language dictionary and the sooner the better. Using English to learn English is very important, it is related to how the brain's nerve cells work in the operation. You could imagine nerve synapses that always connect the English and Japanese parts of the cell (for me is Chinese) together, and establish channels and links between both. Most of the students confuse about learning English and learning to translate, they use mother language to understand English when reciting new words of English. They usually speak slowly, because they need to translate two different languages in their mind two times. Frist time is when they are learning new words, they translate English words into mother language and then remember them. Second time is when they need to use new words in speaking, they construct a complete mother language sentence in the brain and translate it into English. Every time they use English or learn English, they learn a new English word, then simultaneously review a lot of mother language sentences and words (in a comment of dictionary). It also happens in speaking, they speak English but they think them with mother language at the same time. Thinking about nerve cells, what nerve cells’ channels and links will become in this situation? For example, I assume that there is a new word “car” that they don’t understand, the way they recite is not combining car with car image in real world, but combining “car” with ""(as the same meaning in Chinese and Japanese haha). When they want to use it, they build the mother language sentence ”我想乘車車に乗りたいin their mind first, then translate it to English ”I want……”.

If you want to be coherent with your thoughts, you must use English to connect English. Like when you learn your mother language, every time you are thinking of a word, at the same time you are connecting and reviewing a dozen words of your mother language at the same time, and establish a solid channel in the brain nerve.

It is also important to think about the way you record on your notebook and the book you learn for new words, don’t write one English vocabulary and ten mother language words nearby, it’s weird because you are learning English, not your mother language.

Of course, it must be little discomfort and restlessness, people hate the feeling that they don’t understand, they like to understand unknown things in their own way as soon as possible. The fastest speed to understand unknown words is combining with their native language, but it’s is it really the fastest way to learn English? Perhaps some people would say that every time they try to use the English dictionary to understand new words, they feel unclear and upset, but it’s because there is a limit in using words to understand words, such as wheels, the English dictionary explains it as “a circular frame or disk arranged to revolve on an axis, as on or in vehicles or machinery”. If you have never seen wheels in real life, how can you understand them just by comments of dictionary? You are thinking WTF when you are reading it. That’s why we feel more confortable when using mother language to learn English, because we combines English to mother language first, then combines mother language with your real experience in your life, and then you can imagine it easily. So, try to combine English with your real life. For example, like many teachers said, using google to find pictures is a good way to understand words, and write ALL English in your notebook.

Second, I personally think that learning is divided into three parts, 20theory, 60 operation (little different with practice), 20 feedback. You can have no theory, you can have no feedback, but you can’t have no actual operation. Operation is not what we do in our class, because in the class, we are learning how to use English, not are actually using English, one is “learning to use”, another is “use”. The way that things are often recorded in our brain is linked with emotion, it’s why many people say that the best way to learn a language is living in the place where no one understand your language, why? Because you combine your language learning with a real emotional connection of real life, I don’t believe that anyone would think learning how to memorize in class is a very important thing in their life . On the contrary, if you don’t know this word “diving”, and we go diving, then the word will be firmly remembered in your mind, I have tried many kinds of words-recite methods, the best way that I found is to ask beautiful strangers who you don’t know to pronounce the unknown word for you. Trust me; you will never forget this word.
Don’t study in English, LIVE in English.

In addition, those exercises and dialogues in the class, you don’t need to take the outcome of the failure of the dialogues, that is not the actual operation. The so-called operation is what you really need to use English for the real purposes, just like you see a doctor, if you don’t know how to speak your problem, then you need to bear the outcome of the illness, or you could talk with someone who really doesn’t understand your native language. If you don’t know how to say, you can’t achieve the purpose of communication, there is a purpose and consequences behind these acts and communication. Learning in the classroom is not like it, even if you say something wrong, your teachers will correct you and they will not mess up your purpose (because you don’t have any purpose). No purpose, No emotion connection, No outcome of acts. Something that you do in the classroom mostly can only be regarded as theory establish, and theory part, only 20 %.

Finally, I believe that the most important part to learn is to figure out your motives, establish the specific target, and let yourself become target-oriented. Constantly question your learning process, and ask yourself the meaning of existence of each class. Three stages of learning are necessary, the first one is to establish the theory and the second one is the method of operation in classroom, and the last one is to operate your theory in real life. The outcome or consequence of these operations will become your feedback (and also by exams). Feedback is more important than we usually think, it can let we know what the position now we are at now and figure out the gap between ourselves and what the targets that we want. Also it’s necessary to use the feedback to adjust our theory we built at first, then re-run this loop(theoryoperationfeedback), the faster you run and finish this cycle once, the faster you improve your learning efficienctly, finally your theory will become better and better. Well, it’s they’re just my theories, maybe they’re not suitable to others, but anyway, I still believe everyone should build their own theory to learn Engilish by themselves.

There’s a saying that the Japanese do not usually say their opinions, but I'm not a polite and modest Japanese hahaha……I have poor grammar in English, please forgive me.
